For our first Photo Challenge of the 3rd Marking Period, we will be creating miniature worlds or diorama's using tiny model train figurines and everyday objects that serve a different purpose to smaller people.
Using a series of photos you take for this project of the theme of your choice, you will create a sculptural or installation work of art that can either be hung on a surface, from a wall or ceiling, or stand alone. This should be a mixed media art piece combining photos and a variety of art materials of your choice ranging from collage with magazines, wall paper, or other papers, string, sticks, mesh, metal, paint, stencils, etc.
You will want to pick a theme for your photos and plan out or sketch your design ideas. Some materials you may have to provide yourself if Mrs. Gates doesn't have them. You may have to print your own photos depending on how many or how big you want to print them. Photos can be edited or manipulated prior to printing and installing into your work of art. Please see images below for ideas. There are no limitations to what you could do. Click HERE for more ideas! Project Requirements: - A Theme for your Photos - Photos you take yourself! - 2 Pages of a Sketchbook showing your plan for your sculpture - This can include:
Wooden Slice Tokens:
Using a portrait of your choosing, you will edit it in Photoshop and use the following tutorial to incorporate text into the image. You want a portrait with good lighting and some nice contrast areas to work the best. The text you choose to incorporate should relate to the person. It could be song lyrics, a poem, a verse from a book, something they've said, how you feel about that person, etc.
Click HERE for the tutorial. Each student will create a photo showing levitation of a model or themselves. It's important to consider all aspects of the photo - composition, lighting, background, pose, outfit, props, etc. Try to be creative and make it look believable. There are lots of tutorials online if you can't use your current photoshop skills or want to see alternative ways to complete this assignment. Here is one tutorial with some really great examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyIF66722H0
For your third Photo Challenge you will work in groups of 2-3 students and come up with a plan and design for using black light makeup crayons and/or other clothing or makeup items that work with black lights. This will most likely be a close up of the face or a portion of the face/body, etc. Here are some examples.
The Metamorphic Moment theme that encourages students to explore the process and meaning of transformation through time, myth and literature.
Metamorphosis is a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means. Within sects or amphibians, metamorphosis is the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages. It is best embodied in the change of the caterpillar to the butterfly. Metamorphosis also relates to the age-old experience of looking at clouds and recognizing familiar images, like seeing a face transition into a bird. The concept is also woven into our culture. In Greek mythology, metamorphosis explains Zeus transformation into a swan to visit Leda, or Daphne turning into a laurel tree to escape advances. In X-Men, Mystique is a shapeshifter who can morph into another shape or state at will. Western culture is bound by both the delight and terror of metamorphosis. In some situations, it is seen as a punishment, while in other contexts, it is seen as a superpower. In the visual arts, metamorphosis is often the domain of the Surrealism. Dalí was celebrated for his ability to see the world differently, recognizing how to see something transform into something completely different by simply ing his refined techniques to capture that vision for others to see. His painting Old Age, Adolescence and Infancy demonstrates an individual s metamorphosis through time, while his Persistence of Memory uses the symbol of a melting clock to represent the fluid nature of change. The Metamorphic Moment invites students to reflect on the idea of metamorphosis and create their own visual interpretation of metamorphic moment. See examples from the 2020 Art Show HERE! See examples from past shows HERE! Using the projector, a backdrop and a partner, each pair will set up their photo having an image of their choice projected onto their models face and/or whole body. The model can be themselves (using a tripod stand) or a friend.
The image, pose, and outfit of the model should all go together to create the best dramatic composition.
Students will choose an Element of Art or Principle of Design and they will have to create a poster for that element using their own design, research and photos. The poster should include a large title, photos demonstrating how that element is used in photography, some descriptions (short and sweet) of the variety of uses of that element. I want the designs to look MODERN, not too elementary. These posters will go on display in the classroom.
Project Objectives: - Research Elements of Art and Principles of Design Posters
